An 89-year-old uncredentialed radio preacher, Harold Camping, predicted the end of the world today. Yeah, that's right, the end. Camping spent a large sum on the advertisement of the event, even posting it on 2,200 billboards cross country. Not to mention his thousands of followers who may have done the same outrageous spending. Camping claims to have paired events and stories in the Bible with formularical calculations to get today's date. However, he did the same thing and made the same announcement of the world's end in 1994. Then, there's something about a zombie apocalypse that was supposed to happen after the whole rapture. I'm not even going to go into that one....
My take on this- It sounds a bit off to me.
- First of all, if Camping used facts from the Bible in order to prove his theory, then how did he overlook this one:
- Matthew 25:13- "Watch therefore, for you don't know the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming.
- Second of all, didn't Jesus tell us to beware of false prophets in the world? Here's the verse for that one:
- Matthew 7:15- "Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves."
- You can even go to a biblical website, such as Biblegateway.com, or Biblos.com and search "False Prophets". You'd be surprised at how many inquiries turn up.
I worked my regular 12-8 shift today, and was expecting to hear a lot about all of this. I wasn't really in the mood to talk with people about what Camping had predicted and what they believed. On my way to work, I had said a little prayer, telling God that I knew what his word said and that I knew it was right. I then asked him if he'd just give me a peaceful day at work regarding the issue. I didn't want to constantly be dealing with the same conversation with every other customer, but I was ready to share what I knew about God's word if need be. After that, I felt like today was going to be good.
Thankfully, God only gave me about 2 or 3 customers who brought up the world's end. I just wanted to share one of the conversations I had with one of those customers. An older gentleman with an "I Love Jesus" hat came through my line a few minutes after 6 pm. I began scanning his groceries when he looked up at the clock and said, "Well, I guess we missed that by a couple of minutes, didn't we?" I then glanced at my watch and replied, "Yeah, looks like we did. I guess that just proves what was written in the book of Matthew is true versus what Mr. Camping predicted." I then told him about the verse in Matthew that I had looked up and posted on my facebook status this morning (Matthew 25:13 above). He replied, "You got that right. Jesus is the only one who knows the fate of the world and when he's coming, and no man on earth is gonna ever know ahead of time." We carried on our conversation about this topic for a few more minutes while completing his transaction. As he accepted the change I gave back to him, he reached into his wallet and pulled out a "Get out of Hell free" Card. He then placed the card in my hand, and told me that I just needed to keep on believing.
